Galileo’s conflict with the Catholic Church was not simply a clash between science and religion. It was a struggle over interpretation, authority, and the boundaries between mathematics, physics, and theology.
A Dangerous Reading of the Sky
Galileo defended observations including the phases of Venus and argued that sunspots were features of the Sun’s surface. These findings challenged the belief that the heavens were perfect and unchanging. More broadly, they supported a universe in which Earth moved.
Reading the Bible
In his 1615 Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina, Galileo argued that biblical language had been adapted for ordinary people and should not always be read as a technical account of nature. Treating Scripture as a literal scientific description, he warned, could damage the Church’s reputation when observations contradicted that interpretation.
Some clerics and philosophers rejected this approach. Galileo was denounced to the Roman Inquisition, and critics cited biblical passages to insist that the Sun moved. The Inquisition’s consultants declared heliocentrism false and contrary to Scripture in February 1616.
The Church ordered Galileo to stop teaching and defending Copernican theory. Copernicus’s book was suspended until it could be corrected, and several sentences were altered or removed in 1620. Galileo later faced a second trial in 1633, after which he was placed under house arrest and his books were banned.
The controversy revealed how disruptive a moving Earth could be. It shifted the question from “What does the sky do?” to “Who has the right to say what the sky means?”
