The Copernican Revolution has several meanings, but its central story is the replacement of geocentrism with heliocentrism. For more than a millennium, Ptolemy’s Almagest supported a universe in which Earth stood still while the Sun and planets moved around it. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed instead that Earth was one planet among several orbiting a nearly central, stationary Sun. He also argued that Earth rotates daily, travels annually around the Sun, and produces the apparent retrograde motion of planets.

Copernicus did not discard every ancient assumption. He retained circular orbits, epicycles, and uniform speeds, but sought to eliminate Ptolemy’s equant because it violated the ideal that celestial motion should be composed of perfect, uniform circles. His work emerged from a long chain of scholarship involving Greek heliocentrism, Ptolemaic astronomy, medieval European debates, and Persian astronomical criticism.

The model initially faced strong resistance. Protestant leaders Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon attacked it, while the Catholic Church remained officially silent before condemning heliocentrism in 1616. Galileo’s telescope later supplied persuasive evidence: uneven lunar terrain challenged perfect heavens, Jupiter’s moons showed that not everything orbited Earth, and Venus’s full phases undermined the Ptolemaic system. Galileo’s defense of heliocentrism led to a second trial and house arrest in 1633.

The revolution’s consequences extended far beyond astronomy. Earth became an ordinary planet rather than the obvious cosmic center, contributing to a cultural shift toward an immense, impersonal universe. In modern cosmology, the Copernican principle states that humans are not privileged observers. In philosophy and science, the episode became a model of radical intellectual reorganization—a paradigm shift.
