Using an improved instrument capable of about 30× magnification, Galileo observed that the Moon was rough and uneven. Its surface showed irregular boundaries between light and darkness, contradicting the Aristotelian belief that heavenly bodies were perfect spheres.

Then Galileo watched Jupiter over several nights. Four nearby points of light changed position in a pattern impossible for fixed stars. They were moons orbiting Jupiter. This single discovery shattered the idea that every heavenly body had to circle Earth. A planet with its own moons demonstrated that the cosmos could contain multiple centers of motion.

Venus Reveals Its Secret

In 1610, Galileo observed Venus passing through a complete set of phases, from a thin crescent to a full disk. The Ptolemaic system could not account for all these phases, but the Copernican and Tychonic systems could, because Venus’s relationship to the Sun allowed its illuminated side to be seen from changing angles.

Evidence With Consequences

These observations did not prove every detail of Copernicus’s model. But they made Ptolemy’s system highly suspect, and many leading astronomers moved toward heliocentric alternatives. The telescope transformed a debate about mathematical convenience into a confrontation with visible reality.

The deepest surprise was not that the sky looked different through glass. It was that Earth no longer appeared to occupy a unique position in the machinery of the heavens.
