Kant’s Analogy

In the 1787 edition of Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant compared his philosophy with Copernicus’s astronomical hypothesis. Copernicus had moved away from assuming that heavenly bodies revolved around a stationary observer. Kant proposed a parallel change in metaphysics: instead of assuming that knowledge must conform to objects, he examined the possibility that objects conform to the structures of our prior knowledge.

The analogy is striking because it makes the observer active rather than passive. Reality is no longer approached as something simply received; the conditions of knowing become part of the philosophical problem.

A Disputed Comparison

Scholars have argued that Kant’s analogy reverses Copernicus’s logic rather than reproducing it. Tom Rockmore also notes that Kant himself never used the specific phrase “Copernican Revolution.” Nevertheless, the comparison became influential.

A General Name for Intellectual Upheaval
