A Story Designed to Travel
The film’s central structure is easy to recognize across borders: a wealthy man paralyzed after an accident hires a caregiver from a completely different background, and their relationship changes both lives.
In India, the story became Oopiri in Telugu and Thozha in Tamil, released together in 2016. Karthi and Nagarjuna played the male leads. An Argentinian remake, Inseparables, was written and directed by Marcos Carnevale and released in 2016, starring Oscar Martínez and Rodrigo de la Serna.
The American Version
The Weinstein Company acquired English-language remake rights in 2011. After several changes in directors, writers, and proposed casting, the film was eventually titled The Upside. Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart starred, with Neil Burger directing. Released in 2019, it earned $125.9 million worldwide.
Continuing Adaptation
A Turkish remake, Yan Yana, follows Refik, a wealthy man paralyzed after an accident, and Ferruh, a caregiver from a very different background. A Mexican stage version began performances in Mexico City in 2026.

Each adaptation can relocate the social divide, humor, and cultural references while preserving the emotional engine: people who initially seem incompatible discover that their differences are precisely what makes the relationship transformative.
