An Unlikely Beginning
Philippe, a wealthy quadriplegic man living in Paris, needs a live-in caregiver. Driss attends the interview mainly to obtain proof that he was rejected so he can continue receiving benefits. Instead, Philippe offers him a trial position.
Friendship Without Pity
Driss is inexperienced but treats Philippe without the pity others show him. His unconventional care, humor, and energy gradually revive Philippe’s confidence. Philippe introduces Driss to classical music, modern art, opera, and painting, while Driss brings Earth, Wind & Fire into Philippe’s formal birthday concert.

Two Lives Changed
Driss eventually leaves to support his cousin, but Philippe struggles with replacement carers and loses his morale. Driss returns, takes him to the seaside, and helps him meet Eléonore, the woman with whom Philippe has exchanged letters.
Inspired by the real relationship between Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and Abdel Sellou, the film became a major international success. Its memorable message is simple: genuine friendship can begin when people stop treating one another as symbols and start seeing one another as individuals.
