Digital Prosperity
During the Clinton administration, the Digital Revolution and the Internet helped drive economic expansion. New business opportunities reshaped commerce and communication, while the United States remained deeply involved in international conflicts.
Crisis in the New Century
The September 11 attacks killed 2,977 people and launched the war on terror. The United States invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, expanded domestic surveillance, and faced debates over detention and civil liberties. The 2008 financial crisis then produced the Great Recession, threatening the stability of the entire economy.
Barack Obama’s presidency brought economic reforms, healthcare legislation, expanded recognition of gay rights, and renewed debates over race. Donald Trump’s presidency intensified disputes over immigration, trade, executive power, and election legitimacy. The COVID-19 pandemic caused mass death and unemployment, while George Floyd’s murder sparked nationwide protests.
The 2021 Capitol attack exposed the depth of political distrust. At the same time, the Artemis program pointed toward a renewed technological ambition in space. The modern United States therefore contains two simultaneous futures: democratic strain on Earth and ambitious exploration beyond it.
