Their work helped establish botany, zoology, taxonomy, geology, mineralogy, oceanography, meteorology, and related sciences. International crews also created a transnational culture of expertise.

Scientific exploration remained closely tied to empire and commerce. Voyages searched for trade routes, spices, whaling grounds, colonies, and strategic harbors. Encounters could bring violence, exploitation, disease, forced cultural exchange, and the removal of Indigenous artifacts. By the nineteenth century, governments increasingly funded expeditions and professional scientists replaced wealthy amateurs. The Challenger Expedition of 1872–76, with deep-sea dredging and a vast scientific staff, marked the emergence of modern oceanography. Exploration had become less about finding blank spaces on maps and more about understanding Earth’s hidden systems.
