Maritime exploration evolved dramatically between the Age of Discovery and the late nineteenth century. Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French, and English voyages first opened routes to Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, driven largely by trade, colonization, diplomacy, and strategic power. Yet expeditions such as Francisco Hernández’s mission to New Spain showed that overseas travel could also transform knowledge and consumption by bringing plants such as cocoa, corn, and pineapples into Europe.
During the Enlightenment, scientific curiosity became an explicit purpose of exploration. New societies, especially the Royal Society, promoted careful observation, empirical evidence, and published results. Improved theodolites, octants, clocks, compasses, telescopes, and shipbuilding made voyages safer and measurements more accurate. Expeditions began to determine Earth’s shape, chart coastlines, observe planetary events, study magnetic fields, measure ocean depths, and catalogue unfamiliar species.
These missions were mobile laboratories. Naturalists collected specimens, artists documented landscapes and organisms, surgeons studied health, and hydrographers produced maps. Their work helped establish botany, zoology, taxonomy, geology, mineralogy, oceanography, meteorology, and related sciences. International crews also created a transnational culture of expertise.
Scientific exploration remained closely tied to empire and commerce. Voyages searched for trade routes, spices, whaling grounds, colonies, and strategic harbors. Encounters could bring violence, exploitation, disease, forced cultural exchange, and the removal of Indigenous artifacts. By the nineteenth century, governments increasingly funded expeditions and professional scientists replaced wealthy amateurs. The Challenger Expedition of 1872–76, with deep-sea dredging and a vast scientific staff, marked the emergence of modern oceanography. Exploration had become less about finding blank spaces on maps and more about understanding Earth’s hidden systems.
