The world packed into crates
Scientific voyages transformed distant landscapes into collections. Naturalists gathered plants, animals, minerals, shells, and other specimens, while artists recorded organisms before they deteriorated after collection. These materials traveled back to museums, academies, botanical gardens, and private collections.
Hans Sloane’s journey to Jamaica from 1687 to 1689 offers an early example. He carefully described and illustrated specimens, later bequeathing a vast natural-history collection and library to the nation. His legacy helped prompt the establishment of the British Museum.
A team effort
Expeditions divided scientific labor among specialists. Naturalists classified organisms, botanists studied plants, mineralogists examined rocks, surgeons investigated health, and artists created detailed images. The French expedition of Le Géographe and Naturaliste, for example, assembled a vast zoological collection, while HMS Investigator carried Robert Brown, whose observations of Australian flora were among the most extensive of the time.
The United States Exploring Expedition collected about 50,000 plant specimens and 4,000 animal specimens, half of the animal specimens being new species. Other voyages reported more than 1,000 new plant species or thousands of insects, fish, birds, and other organisms.
These collections expanded scientific knowledge, but they were also products of colonial power. Objects and specimens were removed from communities and territories under unequal conditions. Natural history museums therefore preserve both scientific achievement and the history of imperial extraction.
The great lesson is that exploration did not merely reveal life; it reorganized life into collections, classifications, and institutions that still shape how the natural world is understood.
