China’s schools regularly top global tables in math and science. Yet beneath the achievements lie disturbing stories: unsafe food, harsh “treatment” centers for troubled teens, and tight political control over what can be learned or even said.
When School Lunch Becomes a Health Hazard
Food safety scandals have rocked Chinese campuses. In Chengdu in 2019, parents uncovered moldy bread and “smelly pork” served at a secondary school, sparking protests and arrests. Other cases include mass stomachaches at a primary school in Guangdong and fraudulent meat sold to university canteens—duck breast passed off as beef, landing the perpetrator in prison.
Such incidents feed a deeper fear: if schools cannot protect children’s basic health, what else might be going wrong behind closed gates?
Internet Addiction Treatment Schools
Another controversial phenomenon is the rise of “internet addiction” camps. These closed, militarized institutions promise to cure teenagers of online gaming, rebellion, and “school aversion.”
Under strict discipline and isolation, they claim to reform behavior—but reports of abuse have raised alarm among rights advocates. The very existence of such camps reflects a system where deviance from exam-focused norms is quickly medicalized and punished.
Silencing Dissenting Ideas
Academic censorship runs through all levels of education. Textbooks must be vetted by party committees; politically sensitive subjects like history and politics are taught only from standardized, approved texts. In universities, foreign books are scrutinized to prevent “Western values” from entering classrooms, and teachers are tasked with reinforcing socialist ideology.
A System Under Strain
These dark corners do not define all of Chinese education, but they expose the tensions of a system asked to be world‑class, ideologically loyal, and tightly controlled, all at once. The question that lingers is whether such contradictions can remain hidden—or whether they will eventually force change from within.
