Agents assign each possible situation a utility, a number representing how good it is. For any action, the agent estimates the expected utility—how good outcomes are, weighted by how likely they are. The action with the highest expected utility wins.

Real environments are rarely predictable. Agents may not know exactly where they are or what an action will do. Markov decision processes model this uncertainty with probabilities for how actions change the world, plus rewards and costs. A policy then tells the agent what to do in each state, whether it was calculated exactly, approximated with heuristics, or learned from data.

Seeing and Hearing the World

Machine perception lets AI turn raw sensor signals into usable information. Cameras, microphones, lidar, radar, and tactile sensors feed systems that deduce what’s out there. Computer vision tackles images and video, powering tasks like facial recognition, object tracking, and image classification. Speech recognition and other perception tools let robots and software align their internal models with messy reality.

Talking Like Us

Natural language processing (NLP) gives machines the ability to read, write, and converse in human languages. Early systems leaned heavily on grammar and symbolic meaning but struggled outside simplified “micro‑worlds.”

Modern NLP is dominated by deep learning. Word embeddings represent words as points in a high‑dimensional space where meaning becomes geometry: similar words cluster together. The transformer architecture, built around an attention mechanism, made it possible to model longer, more coherent text.

By 2019, generative pre‑trained transformers (GPT) could write surprisingly coherent passages. By 2023, such models reached human‑level scores on exams like the bar, SAT, and GRE, powering chatbots that respond to everyday prompts in flowing prose.
