After the French discovered the Rosetta Stone, the British defeated them and took the stone to London. It changed hands under the Capitulation of Alexandria after a fierce dispute.

Even the Handover Is Murky

Accounts differ on exactly how the stone passed into British hands. One story says it was seized directly; another says it was secretly revealed behind protective carpets among baggage.
